Hot spring along the Sevenmile Hole trail.

A Great Hike into the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The challenging hike into the canyon to Sevenmile Hole offers a chance to get to see some backcountry thermal areas and to get immersed in the colors and sights of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. We really love this one and found it well worth the effort. You can learn more about Yellowstone on our page devoted to camping in the park here.

The Yellowstone River on its way to Sevenmile Hole.

Named for its distance downriver from the Lower Falls, Sevenmile Hole is actually five strenuous miles down into the canyon from the trailhead. It’s uphill on the way back so be sure to bring plenty of food and water for the climb out. The Glacier Boulder Trailhead is the starting point and can be found by following the North Rim Road and taking a right onto the road to Inspiration Point. The trailhead is about a half mile down this road on your left.

Silver Cord Cascade is visible form the trail as you walk through the lodgepole pines.

The trail starts out in a lodgepole pine forest and is fairly flat for the first three miles or so. You’ll come to a junction with the Mount Washburn trail and need to turn to the east (right). In another 3/4 mile or so the trail will start heading down to into the canyon. As you follow the steep switchbacks down you’ll pass a thermal area with some interesting how springs and a geyser. Once you reach the river you can enjoy the scenery and gather your energy for the hike back up and out of the canyon.

An interesting cascade on the far side of the canyon.
