An easy hike to a pretty 70′ waterfall with a loop to an overlook with a view of the Upper Geyser Basin, home of Old Faithful.
The Little Firehole River cascades down a series of steps near Biscuit Basin just off the Grand Loop Road near Old Faithful. It’s an easy out and back hike if you just want to view the falls or you can continue on and up the hall past the falls and loop back to an overlook that offers views of three geyser basins, Upper Geyser Basin, Biscuit Basin and Black Sand Basin.
Park at the Biscuit Basin parking lot, cross the bridge over the Firehole River and follow the boardwalk around to the west side of the basin until you come to the Little Firehole Meadows Trail. It’s not well marked so you may have to look around a bit. Head west and you’ll soon see the Mystic Falls Loop trail on your right. The quickest route to the falls is to stay left. About a tenth of a mile down the trail you’ll see the Summit Lake trail on the left. Stay to the right and you’ll soon start to see the Little Firehole River on the left. In about a half mile you’ll come to the falls.
From the falls you can either retrace your steps or if you’re up to it you can follow the trail up the steep hill to where it meets the Fairy Creek trail. Go right (east) and in about a quarter mile you’ll come to an overlook offering views to the east of the Firehole River, Biscuit Basin, Upper Geyser Basin and Black Sand Basin. Continue to the east down the hill to where the trail rejoins the Mystic Falls trail. Turn left and follow the trail back to Biscuit Basin and the parking area.
